The Costumes of Colic

By Aella Rose-Hill

One of the driving forces behind the costume design was the feeling of a comic book. Comic book art has always employed the strong use of line and color to invite readers into their own world, and I'm constantly amazed by the iconic work that results from each artist's particular style. For Colic, I took the idea of a comic to mean simple silhouettes, distinctive colors, and the use of pattern to add visual interest. I was excited to use our University stock and budget to create something that would create a special place between visual art and performance.

And then Coronavirus happened. I was excited for the challenge to costume a show by using only an actor's personal wardrobe, if not disappointed that things couldn't be finished the way that they were started. Working with the actors to assemble their outfits was a really weird, interesting process, but I'm super grateful for their input and help in making this process work. It made me think on my toes and be able to immediately pinpoint what direction I wanted to go using the clothes that they personally owned. It also taught me to expect the unexpected- something we're all dealing with right now- and how to still be able to create art within the limits of our environment.

I hope you guys enjoy the show!

I always compile playlists for every show I work on that I listen to during my process, be it pulling, researching, or even working on paperwork. It helps put me in the world and reminds me that each show is its own unique entity. Here's the one I made for Colic.
